Samsung is going to be winding down production of plasma display panels (PDPs) by the end of this year, according to an announcement from Samsung SDI. This means that the run of plasma TV sets from the company are going to come to an end.

The reasoning behind the shutdown of their plasma business is that there is a declining demand for the technology. Instead, the company will be focusing on “…growing its energy and materials businesses”, according to the original Reuters report.

Engadget says that the PDP shutdown is planned for 30 November this year, with assets used in the production of plasma units being either repurposed or sold in order to fund other projects. We don’t doubt that at least some of those funds and resources will find their way to Samsung’s other display projects, like their curved and 4K (or both) TV panels.
