Samsung may be feeling a bit jealous of Google, who have picked up Nest, and Apple, who have got HomeKit, so, according to a report from TechCrunch, the South Korean company is looking at – or may have already bought – smart home automation company SmartThings.

The information regarding the possible purchase is sketchy but a figure of $200 million has been bandied about, though it may be lower. Whether Samsung has concluded the deal or is just busy negotiating is uncertain but the purchase would make sense for the company since all of the other big players are looking to enter the smart home devices market.

If the reports are accurate we could see Samsung creating more connected solutions in the home, with more devices along the lines of their smart appliances – likely ones that can be controlled with a user’s smartphone – making an appearance on the market in future. But we’ll have to wait until there is some official word on this maybe-deal before getting too expectant.
