Samsung’s been all over the place, dipping their toes into just about every pool. The latest bit of liquid sampled is an app designed for Alzheimer’s sufferers that Samsung has released for Android.

The creation of Azer Jaafoura and the folks at Samsung Electronics Tunisia, the app – called Backup Memory – is designed to help early-stage Alzheimer’s patients to remember who friends and family are by using Bluetooth connections to detect when those people are nearby and presenting patients with a rundown of who is about to pay them a visit.

Samsung’s explanation? “The app helps patients become aware of their immediate surroundings by identifying nearby family members and friends, and also reminds patients about their relationship with each person and memories they’ve shared in the past through photographs and videos.”

Azer said “Backup Memory is not exactly a technological breakthrough, but it is definitely a good use of existing technology. We are satisfied with the progress so far, but we’d like to do more. There is so much good you can do with technology, and I’d like to think that we’re just getting started.”
