Hey, it’s definitely time to check out another smartphone from up-and-comer Huawei. The Chinese company has had the Huawei G7 around for a while but now it’s here in SA. And about time too.

The Huawei G7 is a 5.5-inch smartphone packing Android, as well as a Qualcomm processor. Even so, the company has their own line of chips in upcoming handsets that give the Snapdragon a run for its money.

The Huawei G7’s 5.5-inch display is a 720 x 1280 effort, one that uses an IPS LCD panel for its colour reproduction. It’s not truly high-end but it doesn’t have to be, Huawei’s been doing good things with their screens of late.

The Snapdragon core is a 1.2GHz Cortex A53, putting the Huawei G7 into the mid-range bracket. It’s backed by a surprisingly large 2GB of system RAM as well as 16GB of storage. But that’s not where you should be looking at this handset.

The cameras, both front and back, should have grabbed your attention first. There’s a 13MP rear camera, which is impressive enough in itself, but there’s also a 5MP front-facer to capitalise on the whole selfie trend. Because, you know, you have to these days.

The Huawei G7 sports Android 4.4.2, as well as the company’s own EmotionUI 3.0, and there’s a 3000mAh battery (non-removable) so you should be able to keep going for a fairly long time – even if Eskom has the power out. You know how they love to do that.

All in all, a decent mid-range contender. Huawei’s up against some tough competition and they know it but the G7 should be able to hold its own.
