Microsoft spend a whole lot of money acquiring Minecraft developer Mojang and they’ve got some big plans for the free-form, build-your-own-world title. Some of these involve making it less free-form but that’s the bigger picture. For now, they’re adding genders on all available platforms of Minecraft.
Previously, players were restricted to playing as Steve by default. Steve is a basic character, which has a selection of other, male-oriented skins that could be applied for a spot of individuality.
But that leaves out 50% of the world, so Mojang are launching a female gender for all platforms of the game. The company said “But jolly old Steve doesn’t really represent the diversity of our playerbase. For that reason, we’re giving all players opportunity to play with an Alex skin instead. She brings thinner arms, redder hair, and a ponytail; she actually looks a bit like Jens from certain angles.”
The update will be free, though mobile gamers will have a wait a little.
Xbox 360 gamers will also be getting updated achievements as well as a new selection of music for when they’re out Creeper-hunting. Bonus.
