When you have something good, you probably shouldn’t be keeping it for yourself. That seems to be Microsoft’s thinking, anyway, as they’re setting up to bring their digital assistant Cortana to platforms other than Windows Phone.

The company is said to be eying Android and iOS, the platforms used by their competitors, as the next place for Cortana to make an appearance. And Cortana will apparently be bringing Einstein along for the ride.

Not Relativity Einstein, of course. Einstein is an AI system being developed by Microsoft and, according to Microsoft Research’s Eric Horvitz “This kind of technology, which can read and understand email, will play a central role in the next roll out of Cortana, which we are working on now for the fall time frame.” Fall being code for Spring this side of the world.

Though Cortana is baked into Windows Phone, if it makes it to Google and Apple’s operating systems it’ll be in the form of an app. We can’t see the other companies being pleased with that but if Cortana is good at what she does…
