It seems like even Microsoft’s cancelled projects aren’t safe from being leaked. Images of what could be an in-development handset by Microsoft’s new mobile arm but is most likely the cancelled McLaren project have been leaked online.

What appears to be a prototype of a Lumia handset, visually similar to the Lumia 1020 cameraphone, were placed on a Chinese bidding website (the entry has since gone missing).

Online commentators have speculated that the phone, which sports 2GB of RAM, as well as a 5-inch 1080p screen and Windows 8.1, might be Project McLaren, which was a smartphone that would have featured a whole collection of Kinect-like gesture features that would allow users to navigate their handsets without coming into contact with the screen.

McLaren was cancelled and what can be seen above might be all that remains of the effort. Microsoft has yet to comment though, so we might still see something like this phone (on a visual level, anyway) hit the market.
